Defensive driver training
So what is defensive driver training?
Defensive driving is a reduced risk driving strategy. It is
designed to help develop the skills required to increase hazard awareness,
identify risk, and develop a safer attitude to driving by linking risk
to accident potential.
'In more than 90% of traffic accidents, human error is the cause.
Accidents do not just happen by chance; they are the consequence of unsafe
driving practice.' Roadcraft, The Police Drivers Handbook
What do our defensive driving courses offer?
As well as practical driving skills, our defensive driver training courses
teach the importance of anticipation, attitude and observation as well as
being sure the vehicle to be driven is in an appropriate condition.
Systematic daily vehicle checks are taught to ensure the vehicle is fit
to drive, including external, internal and engine bay checks.
These checks ensure any defects in a company vehicle are found immediately
and reported. This reporting will save time later by highlighting any
problems early, allow for good maintenance and help to reduce breakdowns,
resulting in reduced costs for the company.
We teach the System of Car Control as set out in the
police drivers' manual Roadcraft. The purpose of this system
is to prevent accidents by giving an approach to hazards
that is safe, systematic and applicable in all circumstances.
There is no secret to Defensive Driving It is purely a way
of driving that raises the driver's awareness of the hazards
involved and enables the driver to make informed decisions,
avoiding the risks. Being a good driver means you never stop
learning. As the roads become more congested, abilities
and skill levels should always be reassessed, otherwise
they become outdated, inappropriate and dangerous. As part
of the report provided at the end of each course, we recommend
reassessment timescales that take into account the skill levels
and aptitude of the drivers that have been trained.
